A Northern support group within the Peoples Democratic Party has endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The group announced the endorsement after its 8th meeting in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, where delegates from all 19 northern states gathered to strategise on repositioning the PDP ahead of the next general election.
In a communiqué signed by the group’s Northern Coordinator, Yusuf Abubakar, and North-West Zonal Secretary, Adamu Ahmed Narayi, members described Jonathan as a unifying figure who represents peace, stability, and progress. They added that his record of leadership and loyalty to the PDP made him the best choice for 2027.
The group dismissed concerns about Jonathan’s eligibility to contest again, insisting that the issue had long been settled. It urged the PDP to intensify mobilisation across the North and strengthen grassroots structures to boost the party’s chances in 2027.
The communiqué also reaffirmed confidence in the PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum, praising his efforts at reconciling aggrieved members and fostering internal unity within the party. It called for discipline and cooperation among members to prevent divisions.
The group expressed optimism that, with renewed commitment and unity, the PDP could reclaim power both at the federal level and in several states currently governed by the All Progressives Congress.
