The Federal Government is set to arraign human rights activist Omoyele Sowore alongside Meta and X before a Federal High Court in Abuja.
This development follows Sowore’s alleged publication of false information against President Bola Tinubu, which the government claims could cause a breakdown of law and order.
Sowore is accused of posting “This criminal @officialPBAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!” on his X handle and Facebook page. According to the government, this post contravenes Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024.
The Department of State Services (DSS) filed a five-count charge against Sowore, Meta, and X, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025. The charge was filed on September 16, after the DSS requested Facebook and X to remove Sowore’s alleged offending post.
Sowore’s posts are said to have damaged the reputation of President Tinubu, and the government is seeking justice for the alleged offense. The case has been assigned to Justice Mohammed Umar, who will preside over the arraignment.
The DSS claims Sowore’s actions contravened the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024 and the Criminal Code Act. If convicted, Sowore and his co-defendants could face penalties under Nigerian law.
The arraignment is set to take place today, September 30, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
