The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized harmful cosmetic products worth over ₦170 million and shut down 10 shops in Abuja for violating Nigeria’s food and drug regulations.
The agency’s enforcement team confiscated products including Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Boobs Enlargement supplements, and Skin Whitening Vitamin Gummies, among others.
NAFDAC’s enforcement action revealed that two Chinese supermarkets in Jabi District were selling unregistered food products labeled solely in Chinese, violating the agency’s mandatory English language labeling requirement. Eight cosmetics shops at Wuse Market were also shut down for selling banned, expired, and unregistered cosmetics, aphrodisiacs, and aesthetic medicines.
The agency’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting public health, warning that any act of selling unregistered or toxic products would face strict regulatory action. “NAFDAC welcomes legitimate trade partnerships from both Nigerians and foreign nationals, but we will not compromise on public health,” Adeyeye emphasized.
Investigations revealed that some individuals were posing as dermatologists and pharmacists, prescribing and selling harmful products to unsuspecting consumers for body enhancement, skin whitening, and aesthetic improvement. These products expose consumers to serious health risks, including skin cancer, kidney damage, irritability, and memory loss.
NAFDAC advised consumers to purchase only NAFDAC registered products and urged foreign investors to register their products with the agency. The agency also warned that selling unregistered or toxic products would attract strict regulatory sanctions.
The enforcement action is part of NAFDAC’s efforts to sanitize the Nigerian market and protect public health. The agency has urged the public to report suspicious products or outlets to NAFDAC offices nationwide.
