The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has faulted Vice President Kashim Shettima over alleged remarks suggesting that the Dangote Group should be treated as a national asset and shielded from certain labour laws.
In a statement issued by NLC President Joe Ajaero to mark the 2025 World Day for Decent Work, the Congress described the comments as troubling and a threat to the principles of fair labour and the rule of law.
Ajaero said no company or individual, regardless of status or contribution to the economy, should be placed above Nigeria’s labour laws.
He cautioned that such remarks could promote impunity and weaken the nation’s resolve to protect workers’ rights. According to him, “No company, no matter how big or strategic, can operate outside the law or be bigger than Nigeria.”
The NLC leader urged the government to ensure full compliance with labour standards and guarantee fair treatment for all workers in both public and private sectors.
He further stated that the era of sacred cows must end, insisting that protecting corporate interests at the expense of workers would only deepen inequality and social injustice in the country.
