The Federal Government has officially endorsed Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias as Nigeria’s candidate for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on November 12, 2025.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, made the announcement in Abuja, stressing the importance of equitable geographical representation at the ICJ. He noted, “No ECOWAS member state has occupied a seat on the ICJ bench since 2011, making West African representation in global judicial matters critical.”
Tuggar described Dr. Elias as “an eminent jurist of integrity with vast experience in international law” and expressed confidence that his election would strengthen Africa’s influence in promoting global justice.
In response, Dr. Elias said, “I pledge to serve with dedication, impartiality, and fairness if elected,” highlighting his readiness to represent Nigeria and Africa at the highest judicial level.
The Federal Government believes Dr. Elias’ election would ensure Africa’s voice is heard in international legal decisions, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to global justice and the rule of law.
