The Federal Government of Nigeria has re-awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the Ibadan–Ife–Ilesa Expressway to CBC Global Civil & Building Construction Nigeria Limited.
The decision follows the termination of the previous contract with Kopek Construction Company due to unsatisfactory progress on the project. Hon. Akin Alabi, representing the Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency, confirmed the development in a statement to the media, emphasizing the government’s commitment to restoring one of the region’s most important transport corridors.
The Ibadan–Ife–Ilesa Expressway is a vital route linking Oyo and Osun States, facilitating significant commercial, social, and economic activities. For years, commuters and residents have faced challenges due to the deteriorating condition of the road, which has resulted in congestion and damage to vehicles. The Federal Government views the expressway as a strategic infrastructure project, essential for enhancing connectivity and supporting regional development in southwestern Nigeria.
CBC Global Civil & Building Construction Nigeria Limited is a reputable multinational company with extensive experience in delivering large-scale infrastructure projects across Nigeria and Africa. The firm is expected to employ modern construction techniques, ensuring the road’s durability and long-term sustainability. Hon. Alabi highlighted that the re-award signals the Federal Government’s dedication to improving national infrastructure and ensuring that critical projects are executed effectively.
Work on the reconstruction is slated to begin from the Osun State end of the expressway. Hon. Alabi is also in discussions with the contractor to commence palliative works on the most deteriorated sections within Egbeda and Ona-Ara constituencies. These temporary interventions are aimed at providing immediate relief to commuters while full reconstruction efforts get underway.
The re-award of the contract has been met with optimism from residents, traders, and road users who have long endured the challenges of the damaged expressway. Stakeholders expressed hope that the project will improve safety, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic activities along the route. Hon. Alabi commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for prioritizing the completion of this critical infrastructure.
The Federal Government has assured the public that regular updates will be provided to track developments and ensure accountability. Authorities have encouraged residents and commuters to engage with project stakeholders to monitor progress. With renewed commitment and a capable contractor in place, the Ibadan–Ife–Ilesa Expressway reconstruction is set to restore one of southwestern Nigeria’s key transportation arteries.
