The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC has launched an investigation into an allegation made by Nigerian rapper Oladips that some of its officers extorted N10 millio n from him during his detention in 2024.
The artiste alleged that he was unlawfully held despite no incriminating evidence being found against him.
Oladips, whose real name is Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji, claimed he was detained for five days and was forced to pay the money before he was released. He described the conditions he experienced as unpleasant, saying he was “packed with others like sardines” and fed with food that was “unfit for human consumption.”
According to the rapper, the incident left him traumatised, as he had expected the agency to uphold justice and professionalism. He expressed disappointment, stating that the treatment he received did not reflect the standards expected of an organisation tasked with fighting corruption.
Reacting to the allegation, the EFCC said it “views with great seriousness the allegation of extortion made against some of its operatives by Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji also known as Oladips.” The agency confirmed that the officers linked to the case have been summoned to its headquarters and removed from active duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
The EFCC emphasised that integrity remains a core value of the commission and assured the public that anyone found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary action. However, the agency also warned that if the claim is discovered to be false and aimed at damaging its reputation, necessary sanctions will be taken against the rapper.
The commission urged Nigerians to remain patient as it completes its investigation and restated its commitment to fighting economic and financial crimes without fear or favour. It also encouraged citizens to continue to support efforts geared towards promoting transparency and accountability in public institutions.
