UPDATED: Courage Under Fire: Honouring Nigeria’s Fallen Heroes In Borno

“Gallantry and Sacrifice in Borno’s Deadly Landscape”

The ambush of four brave security personnel in Borno State last Friday is a stark reminder of the relentless dangers that Nigeria’s armed forces face daily. Two soldiers and two members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), paid the ultimate price while performing their duty—patrolling communities near Wajiroko in Azir Multe, Damboa Local Government Area—protecting citizens from the persistent threat of Boko Haram insurgents.

This tragic event is not just a headline; it is a testament to the extraordinary courage, resilience, and patriotism of our troops. Acting Army Public Relations Director, Appolonia Anele confirmed that the patrol team, led by Brigadier General M. Uba, fought through a sudden and heavy insurgents’ fire, forcing the attackers to retreat.

Despite their training and superior firepower, four heroes did not return home. Their sacrifice should stir not only our grief but our profound respect.

Yet, while the nation mourns, misinformation continues to circulate. False claims about the abduction of the Brigade Commander threaten to distract from the bravery of the fallen and the mission of the Nigerian Army.

We must reject such distortions. The truth is simple: these men and women are standing on the frontlines of one of the most dangerous conflict zones in the world, often at great personal risk, to secure our communities.

Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff, rightly saluted their valour, reminding us that the daily sacrifices of our troops are the bedrock of national security. Their courage is not abstract—it is the reason families in Borno can sleep at night, children can attend school, and communities can hold on to hope amid violence.

As a nation, we owe more than just words of condolence. We owe vigilance against the forces that threaten peace, unwavering support for our security agencies, and a commitment to honoring the memory of those who fall in service to Nigeria.

The four heroes lost in Borno represent countless others who operate in silence, in danger, and without fanfare. Their story demands recognition, not rumour. Their courage deserves admiration, not neglect.

In a world that too often takes safety for granted, let us pause to remember—and to act. Our security forces fight battles that many of us never see, and in doing so, they embody the very essence of duty, bravery, and sacrifice. Nigeria must not forget them.
