The Confederation of African Football (CAF), on Sunday unveiled the finalists for its prestigious 2025 CAF Awards, and the competition promises to be fierce. In the Men’s Player of the Year category, the last three standing are Victor Osimhen (Nigeria/Galatasaray), Mohamed Salah (Egypt/Liverpool), and Achraf Hakimi (Morocco/PSG).

The announcement cements the status of these three as Africa’s elite footballers, each bringing a unique style and outstanding record to the table. Osimhen, who previously won the award in 2023, will be looking to reclaim his crown. Meanwhile, Salah and Hakimi are aiming to add their names to the illustrious list of African football greats.

Victor Osimhen’s Nigerian teammate, Ademola Lookman, had claimed the award last year, highlighting the Super Eagles’ continued dominance on the continent.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, November 19, 2025, in Rabat, Morocco, a city that promises a spectacular stage for celebrating African football excellence.

The Contenders

Victor Osimhen (Nigeria/ Galatasaray)

Osimhen has had a sensational season in Turkey, scoring 37 goals in 41 matches and contributing 7 assists, guiding Galatasaray to both the Turkish Süper Lig and Turkish Cup titles. His explosive pace, clinical finishing, and sheer presence in the box make him a constant threat and a favorite among voters. Having already won in 2023, Osimhen knows the path to glory and is looking to prove that his 2025 season is even more remarkable.

Mohamed Salah (Egypt/ Liverpool)

Salah continues to be a cornerstone of African football. With 34 goals and 23 assists in 52 appearances, he remains one of the most consistent and influential players for both club and country. His leadership and creativity on the pitch make him a perpetual threat, and with past CAF Player of the Year wins in 2017 and 2018, Salah’s pedigree cannot be ignored.

Achraf Hakimi (Morocco/ PSG)

Hakimi offers a different but equally compelling case. The dynamic Moroccan full-back scored 9 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 appearances, playing a key role in PSG’s trophy-laden season. Known for his versatility, blistering pace, and attacking runs from the back, Hakimi combines defensive solidity with creative flair — a modern full-back who can change games on both ends of the pitch.

Women’s Player of the Year

The Super Falcons’ captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, has also made the final three in the Women’s Player of the Year category. She faces tough competition from Ghizlane Chebbak (Morocco), and Sanaa Mssoudy (Morocco), setting the stage for another thrilling contest celebrating Africa’s top female talent.

What Could Decide the Winner?

  1. Statistics and Impact: Osimhen’s goal-scoring prowess is hard to beat, while Salah’s all-around influence and Hakimi’s attacking contributions from defense make them formidable candidates.

  2. Team Success: Club trophies and international impact often sway voters. Osimhen’s double with Galatasaray and Hakimi’s contributions to PSG give them an edge.

  3. Voter Perception: A mix of CAF officials, national team coaches and captains, and journalists determine the winner — meaning both stats and narrative matter.

  4. Momentum and Narrative: Osimhen’s return to form, Salah’s consistency, and Hakimi’s high-profile role create compelling stories for voters to consider.

Conclusion

The 2025 CAF Player of the Year awards bring together Africa’s finest. Whether it’s Osimhen’s striking brilliance, Salah’s creativity and leadership, or Hakimi’s multifaceted impact from defense, the race is set to captivate fans. The awards in Rabat on November 19 will crown the continent’s best, with both men’s and women’s competitions showcasing Africa’s talent on a global stage.

For African football fans with our continent and beyond, it’s more than an award — it’s a celebration of skill, perseverance, and the pride of the continent.
