Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
saying the country is “persistently bleeding” because those elected to protect it have chosen comfort over courage and politics over the people.
Obi, who shared his thoughts in a post via his verified X handle late on Sunday, said the last 10 days in Nigeria had produced alarming negative reports, ranging from insecurity to institutional decay. He noted that the rising chaos should trouble the conscience of every leader.
The former Anambra State governor said Nigeria’s current challenges were not caused by fate, but by accumulated leadership failures that have allowed lawlessness, insecurity, and weakened institutions to thrive. According to him, each day confronts the nation with a new tragedy, exposing what he described as the absence of competent and compassionate leadership.
Obi lamented that a country blessed with resilient people has drifted into avoidable disorder. He questioned whether Nigeria was “cursed” or whether its problems were self inflicted, highlighting the growing frustration among citizens.
He also disclosed that while reflecting on the nation’s challenges, he received news of the abduction of 13 female farmers in Askira Uba LGA of Borno State by suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters. He said no serious nation survives on excuses or absentee leadership, adding that Nigeria is bleeding because leaders have failed to value human life.
Obi stressed that governance is a duty to protect every citizen and not merely a title. He extended sympathy to Nigerians affected by recent events, insisting that the people deserve safety, peace, and a government that prioritizes their lives above politics.
