The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Kebbi State has condemned the recent abduction of schoolgirls, describing it as a calculated attempt to weaken educational development in the region.
The group stated that the incident represents an attack on children’s safety and their right to learn in an atmosphere free from fear.
Chairman of the coalition, Ibrahim Ngaski, made the remarks during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi on Monday. He recalled that on November 17, suspected bandits attacked Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga and abducted 25 students. He described the act as “heinous,” stressing that it strikes at the heart of the state’s efforts to promote education.
Ngaski said every child deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams without the threat of violence. He urged the government to intensify search and rescue operations to secure the immediate release of the abducted students and others in captivity. He also called for improved security around schools and vulnerable communities across the state.
The coalition recommended the relocation of boarding schools situated in remote or high-risk areas to safer locations to prevent future attacks. Ngaski encouraged authorities to work closely with community leaders and other stakeholders to strengthen dialogue, early-warning systems and peace-building initiatives.
He further highlighted the need for psychological support and other assistance for the affected families, stressing the importance of implementing the Safe Schools Initiative. According to him, Kebbi State, as a beneficiary of World Bank support under the AGILE Project, must ensure full utilisation of the programme’s resources.
Ngaski also appealed for improved cooperation with neighbouring states such as Sokoto, Zamfara and Niger, especially in intelligence gathering and preventing further attacks. He urged Nigerians, the media and the international community to stand with the affected families, adding that vigilance from parents and teachers is crucial in ensuring children can learn without fear.
