In a landmark event for international diplomacy, President Donald J. Trump joined President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), to sign the Washington Accords, a major peace agreement aimed at fostering stability and cooperation in Central Africa.

The historic signing took place at the Donald J. Trump Institute for Peace in Washington, D.C., marking a pivotal moment in the region’s pursuit of lasting peace.

The Washington Accords outline a comprehensive framework for collaboration between Rwanda and the DRC, focusing on conflict resolution, cross-border security, economic development, and humanitarian aid.

Leaders from both nations expressed optimism that the agreement would end longstanding tensions and pave the way for stronger regional integration.

In his remarks, President Trump emphasized the importance of diplomacy and international partnership.

“Today, we witness the power of dialogue over division,” he said. “The Washington Accords represent not just a treaty, but a commitment to a future where peace and prosperity prevail over conflict and hardship.”

President Kagame highlighted the transformative potential of the accords for the people of Rwanda and the DRC. “This agreement is a testament to what can be achieved when nations choose cooperation over confrontation,” Kagame stated. “We are committed to building a future where our children inherit peace, opportunity, and security.”

President Tshisekedi echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the human impact of peace and stability. “For decades, our communities have endured the consequences of conflict,” he said. “With the Washington Accords, we embark on a path toward reconciliation, growth, and shared prosperity.”

The Washington Accords have been hailed by international observers as a significant step toward reducing tensions in the Great Lakes region of Africa, an area historically affected by armed conflicts and cross-border instability. Analysts note that the agreement could serve as a model for regional cooperation, demonstrating the potential of dialogue, compromise, and joint commitment to peace.

As the leaders signed the accords, a sense of hope and determination filled the hall. The historic event serves as a reminder that even in regions long marked by discord, diplomacy and collaboration can create opportunities for lasting change.

The world will now watch closely as Rwanda and the DRC begin implementing the ambitious initiatives outlined in the Washington Accords, hoping that this moment in Washington will indeed mark the beginning of a new era of peace.
