The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Lamurde Local Government Area following a renewed outbreak of communal violence that erupted late Sunday evening.

The curfew, which takes immediate effect, was announced in a statement signed on Monday by Hussaini Hammangabdo, Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor. The government said the decision became necessary to prevent further breakdown of law and order as tensions escalated across communities in the area.

Swift Security Deployment Ordered

According to the statement, Governor Fintiri has directed security agencies to rapidly deploy to all communities affected or threatened by the unrest. Their mandate, the statement emphasized, is to restore peace, protect residents, and prevent the violence from spreading.

The statement reads in part:

“The Adamawa State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Lamurde Local Government Area with immediate effect following a renewed communal clash that broke out on Sunday evening.

Signed by Hussaini Hammangabdo, Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, security agencies have been directed to move into the area and restore peace and order without delay.”

Government Calls for Calm

As security operatives intensify efforts to stabilise the area, the state government has appealed to residents of Lamurde to remain calm, cooperate with authorities, and avoid actions that may inflame tensions further.

The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring citizens that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent the situation from escalating into a wider conflict.

Background

Lamurde LGA has experienced a series of communal tensions in recent times, often sparked by land disputes, boundary disagreements, or long-standing inter-community grievances. The latest outbreak of violence has raised concerns about renewed instability in the region, prompting the governor’s decisive response.

With the curfew now in force, movement has been restricted across the entire local government area as security agencies work round the clock to restore peace.
