“LASTMA Leverages Drone Technology To Ease Detty December Congestion”

“LASTMA combines technology and strategy to keep Lagos roads safe and moving.”

As Lagos gears up for Detty December, the city’s annual end-of-year festivities marked by concerts, carnivals, religious gatherings, and recreational events, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), has rolled out a comprehensive traffic control strategy aimed at guaranteeing seamless vehicular movement and public safety across the metropolis.

Preparing for the Festive Surge

In anticipation of the yuletide rush and heightened socio-economic activities, LASTMA activated a comprehensive, intelligence-driven traffic management mechanism. The strategy combines traditional enforcement with modern technology, including the deployment of drones and other traffic management solution devices, to monitor traffic situations in real-time and detect security concerns across Lagos.

According to LASTMA spokesperson Taofiq Adebayo, the initiative is designed to ensure that residents and visitors experience minimal disruption during the busy festive season. “The yuletide season traditionally witnesses a significant escalation in vehicular density arising from concerts, carnivals, end-of-year celebrations, religious gatherings, and other recreational engagements,” he stated.

Drones and Technology at Work

The drones deployed by LASTMA provide aerial surveillance of key traffic corridors, enabling quick detection of bottlenecks and incidents. Beyond traffic monitoring, the drones also help spot potential security challenges, with any concerns promptly relayed to relevant security agencies for swift response.

In addition, speed monitoring devices and other technological tools have been deployed to capture traffic offenders in real-time, reducing the risk of physical altercations between officers and motorists during enforcement. The use of technology is part of LASTMA’s broader goal to modernise traffic control and enhance operational efficiency during the festive season.

Strategic Personnel Deployment

LASTMA has also strategically positioned highly trained traffic personnel across critical corridors, major arterial roads, event hotspots, and commercial districts. These personnel are responsible for ensuring smooth traffic flow, managing road safety, and enforcing compliance with traffic regulations.

The agency has issued strict warnings to operators of clubs, event centers, lounges, and entertainment facilities to ensure adequate parking and internal traffic management to prevent spillover onto public roads, which could lead to obstruction or gridlock.

Market leaders, traders, and commercial stakeholders were also urged to avoid illegal displays on roads, walkways, and pedestrian paths, which can escalate congestion and pose safety risks.

Motorist Safety and Compliance

LASTMA advises motorists to ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound before traveling during the festive period and to avoid reckless behaviors such as drunk driving and speeding. The agency stressed that enforcement teams will remain vigilant throughout Detty December, clamping down on illegal parking, road obstruction, speeding, and impaired driving.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to cooperate with traffic officers, obey regulations, and exercise patience, as collective compliance is essential to achieving a safe and enjoyable festive season. For any traffic-related issues, the public can contact LASTMA via the toll-free hotline: 0800 005 27862.

Additionally, high-, medium-, and low-capacity tow trucks have been strategically positioned across the state, particularly along the Lekki-Ajah corridor, to handle any eventualities.

Smarter Traffic Management for Detty December

By integrating drones, digital surveillance, and traditional enforcement, LASTMA is pioneering a tech-driven, intelligence-led traffic management approach in Lagos. The city, which has already experienced high vehicular activity in recent days, stands to benefit from this enhanced operational readiness, ensuring that the festive celebrations can proceed safely and without the chaos of gridlock.

The move represents a significant step toward modernising urban traffic control, combining technology, strategy, and public cooperation to keep Lagos moving during one of the busiest periods of the year.
