Vehicle Owners In Lagos Can Replace Faded Number Plates At Reduced Cost For Three Months

A Citizen-Friendly Scheme to Make Vehicle Plate Replacement More Affordable

The Lagos State Government (LASG), has launched a three-month rebate scheme to help vehicle owners replace faded and unreadable number plates. This initiative is part of the state’s broader efforts to enhance road safety, improve vehicle identification, and strengthen security across Lagos.

Purpose of the Rebate

According to the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola, the rebate is a proactive, citizen-friendly measure designed to:

  • Encourage compliance with vehicle registration regulations.

  • Reduce the financial burden on motorists.

  • Support law enforcement and traffic management efforts.

Mr. Muri-Okunola highlighted that legible number plates are critical for effective traffic monitoring, crime detection, and overall public safety.

Faded or unclear plates, he noted, create challenges for traffic officials, security personnel, and digital tracking systems.

How the Rebate Works

The rebate applies only to number plates that have become worn, faded, or unclear due to age or environmental factors. Motorists are encouraged to take advantage of this window by visiting:

  • MVAA One Stop Centre, Oshodi (Pilot Centre), or

  • Any official MVAA station across the state.

During the rebate period, vehicle owners can replace their number plates at a reduced cost, making compliance more accessible.

Government’s Approach

The initiative reflects the Lagos State Government’s philosophy of balancing enforcement with empathy:

  • Rather than penalizing motorists, the program offers incentives for voluntary compliance.

  • It emphasizes public safety, recognizing that standardized and clear number plates support traffic management, law enforcement, and emergency response systems.

Mr. Muri-Okunola also warned motorists to avoid unauthorized agents, stressing that all replacements must be processed through official government-approved centers to ensure legitimacy and quality.

Broader Impacts

Beyond improving vehicle aesthetics, maintaining legible number plates:
  • Helps curb traffic violations.

  • Supports law enforcement investigations.

  • Enhances the effectiveness of digital vehicle tracking and other security measures.

Government Commitment

LASG remains committed to innovative policies that prioritise safety, convenience, and accountability. Through this rebate scheme, the state aims to foster a safer, more orderly, and well-regulated transport environment for all residents.
