In a significant development for national security architecture, Tunji Disu has formally assumed office as Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following his decoration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

The ceremony, held on Wednesday, marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Nigeria Police Force, coming at a time when Nigeria faces persistent security challenges ranging from banditry to terrorism. Disu’s appointment follows the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun, pending ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate. The council is scheduled to meet next week.

A Charge to Restore Peace and Public Confidence

During the decoration ceremony, President Tinubu charged the Acting IGP with the urgent responsibility of restoring peace and strengthening security nationwide. He emphasized the need for decisive leadership, professionalism, and collaboration across security agencies.

“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said, recalling Disu’s service record and commitment to duty.

The President described the appointment as coming at a critical moment for Nigeria. He urged Disu to rebuild public trust in the police and enhance operational effectiveness in synergy with other security forces.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” Tinubu added.

Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda

President Tinubu further directed the Acting IGP to align policing strategies with the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He expressed confidence in Disu’s discipline, operational experience, and leadership acumen.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” the President stated.

The Renewed Hope Agenda, which places security at the forefront of national development, seeks to create an enabling environment for economic growth and social stability. The President reiterated his belief that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges under committed and visionary leadership.

Tribute to Outgoing IGP Kayode Egbetokun

The ceremony also provided an opportunity for President Tinubu to pay tribute to the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who attended the event alongside his spouse.

“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” the President said.

He encouraged Egbetokun to remain available to offer guidance and counsel to his successor, noting that leadership continuity is vital for institutional stability.

“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” Tinubu remarked, wishing the former IGP and his family peace, good health, and success in their future endeavours.

Call for Collective Security Efforts

President Tinubu concluded his address by urging all security stakeholders to work collaboratively to safeguard lives and property during this critical period in the nation’s history.

Among those present at the decoration were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori; and retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, alongside senior government officials and members of the Acting IGP’s family.

A New Era for the Nigeria Police Force

Tunji Disu’s assumption of office signals both continuity and renewal within the Nigeria Police Force. With the full backing of the President and the expectation of formal ratification, Mr. Tunji Disu steps into his role at a pivotal time.

The coming weeks will test his ability to translate presidential confidence into measurable security improvements. As Nigeria confronts complex and evolving threats, Nigerians eyes remain firmly fixed on the new police leadership and its capacity to deliver peace, stability, and renewed public trust.

May Tunji Disu Succeed. May Nigeria Succeed.
