TotalEnergies is entering a critical growth phase across its African portfolio in 2026, marked by increased capital investment, major project developments, and renewed exploration efforts. The company’s Africa strategy will be highlighted by Senior Vice President, Mike Sangster, at the Invest in African Energy Forum 2026, scheduled for April 22–23 in Paris.

Africa continues to be a cornerstone of TotalEnergies’ global operations, contributing approximately half of its operated production and representing its largest exploration investment region. The company’s current pipeline spans oil, gas, LNG, and renewable energy projects, positioning it for sustained output growth through 2026 and beyond.

Strategic Importance of Africa

TotalEnergies’ commitment to Africa is reflected in:
  • 50% of global operated production originating from the continent
  • Largest share of exploration budget allocated to African assets
  • A diversified energy portfolio, including oil, LNG, gas monetisation, and renewables

This strategic focus is now transitioning from exploration into execution and production growth, signaling a new investment cycle.

Key Upstream Oil Developments

Republic of Congo – Moho Nord Expansion

In the Republic of Congo, TotalEnergies has:

  • Committed $500 million (2025)
  • Targeted 40,000 barrels per day (bpd), in additional production
  • Focused on the Moho Nord field, already contributing roughly 50% of national output

This expansion reinforces Congo’s role as a major production hub.

Uganda – Tilenga Project and EACOP

In Uganda:

  • The Tilenga oil project is advancing toward first oil
  • Supported by the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP):
    • Length: 1,443 km
    • Export route to Tanga, Tanzania

This project is a key component of East Africa’s emerging oil export infrastructure.

LNG and Gas Monetization Projects

Mozambique LNG Restart

In Mozambique:

  • TotalEnergies is restarting its $20 billion LNG project
  • Planned capacity: 13 million tons per annum (mtpa)
  • Represents one of Africa’s largest gas developments
The phased restart is expected to:
  • Unlock significant offshore gas reserves
  • Drive medium-term production growth
  • Strengthen Africa’s position in global LNG markets
Gas Strategy and Environmental Commitments

TotalEnergies is prioritising:

  • Gas monetisation projects (export and domestic supply)
  • Zero routine flaring in:
    • Nigeria
    • Gabon
    • Angola

This aligns with broader energy transition and sustainability goals.

Frontier Exploration and Emerging Opportunities

Namibia – Venus Discovery

In Namibia:

  • Targeting Final Investment Decision (FID): Q4 2026
  • Venus discovery is considered:
    • A high-impact deepwater asset
    • One of the most closely watched global exploration projects
South Africa – Orange Basin Exploration

In South Africa:

  • Planned drilling in Block 3B/4B
  • Located in the Orange Basin, an emerging exploration hotspot
  • Pending regulatory approvals

This reflects increasing industry interest in Southern Africa’s offshore potential.

Renewable Energy and Power Investments

Beyond hydrocarbons, TotalEnergies is diversifying into:
  • Solar projects across Southern and North Africa
  • Hydropower development in Uganda

This supports:

  • Energy diversification
  • Lower-carbon energy production
  • Long-term sustainability targets

Production Outlook

The combination of:
  • New upstream projects
  • LNG developments
  • Frontier exploration
is expected to:
  • Reverse prior production declines
  • Deliver output recovery through 2026
  • Establish a long-term growth trajectory

Industry Engagement: IAE Forum 2026

The Invest in African Energy Forum 2026 will:
  • Bring together investors, policymakers, and energy leaders
  • Serve as a platform for deal-making and partnerships
  • Act as a precursor to African Energy Week
Mike Sangster’s participation underscores:
  • The scale of TotalEnergies’ African ambitions
  • The importance of investor engagement in advancing projects

Conclusion

TotalEnergies is managing one of its most extensive and dynamic African project pipelines in recent years.

With simultaneous investments in oil, LNG, gas monetisation, and renewables, the company is well-positioned to:
  • Strengthen its leadership in African energy markets
  • Drive production growth through 2026 and beyond
  • Support the continent’s role in global energy supply

The upcoming IAE Forum will serve as a key moment to showcase this strategy and attract further investment into Africa’s evolving energy landscape.
