How To Start Liking Vegetables If You Disliked While Them Growing Up

Some of us never learned to like vegetables and no doctor’s recommendation or warning can change that.

But there’s still hope for you now.

Vegetables are essential for eating healthy, but getting enough of them can be a challenge when we never liked them. It can be hard to consider them when shopping, not to mention preparing them. For someone who doesn’t like vegetables, eating them can feel like a punishment with bad memories of meal time in childhood.

Moving away from this experience requires some help.

Some things to note:

There are many vegetables you have not tried and they will not taste the same as the ones you are familiar with. Forget the staple vegetables and explore that’s how you’ll find the ones for your palate.

As we grow, our taste changes to include a higher tolerance for bitter flavours and accommodation for wider food tastes. This means that what we hated in childhood can have a different effect on our palate. We might find ourselves liking things we used to dislike.

Here are some things to help you get back in the groove.

Get someone to help

If you need a reminder when shopping or increasing your veggie intake, as a friend or family member to help. You can also enlist a health partner to help you develop the habit of buying and eating veggies.

Add something nice to them

You don’t have to eat vegetables in a healthy way when starting. Add something you like to the veggie dish such as butter, ghee, spices, herbs, etc.

Experiment with opposite texture

Find out if you like your veggies overcooked, slightly crunchy, soft, or as salads. It is common for people to say that overcooking veggies makes them lose their nutrients, but you don’t have to worry about that for now.

Choose new vegetables

Try vegetables you have never eaten before. When in situations that offer you a chance to explore new vegetables go for them. If you find those you don’t like, you simply wash the taste away.

Chop and season your salads

Get dressing and seasoning ingredients for your veggies. Almost all dressings can make any salad taste amazing, such as vinegar and lemon juice. Consider chopping your salad into fine pieces. Blend sweet veggies together or with less sweet veggies.

You also roast them or bake them in an oven.
