U.S. Expresses Concerns Over Zimbabwe’s Recent Election Process

U.S. President Joe Biden

The United States has expressed concerns regarding the presidential election in Zimbabwe, emphasizing their dedication to upholding the peoples right to choose their leaders through democratic processes.

The election results, announced by the Zimbabwe Election Commission (ZEC), have come under scrutiny from various international observers, who have cited numerous issues that question the credibility of the electoral process.

Observation missions from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and other international bodies have voiced their reservations, pointing to transparency, fairness, and independence as key areas of concern throughout all stages of the election process.

One prominent issue highlighted is the perceived bias against political opposition in the lead-up to the elections. Reports from respected civil society groups have also indicated alleged pressure on election observers by ZEC officials to endorse altered polling station result forms.

To bolster confidence in the tabulation process, the U.S. is urging the ZEC to publicly release detailed polling station results.

The U.S. has additionally condemned the disturbing instances of intimidation and disruption faced by legitimate election observers during the election period.

The government’s arrests of personnel from reputable civil society organizations, who were engaged in lawful election observation as per the Electoral Act, has obstructed independent verification of the announced results.

Independent verification is considered a vital aspect of democratic procedures worldwide. Moreover, threats directed at members of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission have prompted a strong call for the Zimbabwean government to cease such unwarranted attacks.

These developments seem to contradict President Mnangagwa’s previous pledges to uphold the rule of law, transparency, and accountability.

The United States is actively engaging with regional leaders to share these concerns, with implications for the international community’s ongoing efforts to reestablish communication with the Zimbabwean government. The situation holds significant implications not just for Zimbabwe, but for the broader region as well. Amid these concerns, the U.S. urges all citizens of Zimbabwe to maintain a peaceful stance and address their grievances through established legal channels.
