An arrest has been made in connection with the long-standing investigation into the 1996 murder of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur, according to a reliable law enforcement source cited by CNN.
The arrested individual, identified as Duane Keith Davis, who goes by the alias “Keffe D,” was apprehended in Las Vegas on Friday morning. His wife’s residence in Henderson had previously been searched by authorities in July as part of the ongoing inquiry into the fatal shooting.
Tupac Shakur, a prominent figure in the music industry, tragically lost his life at the age of 25 when he was shot and killed while leaving a boxing match on the bustling Las Vegas Strip. His murder has remained a subject of intense speculation, conspiracy theories, and an exhaustive decades-long investigation.
Davis has long claimed to have been present at the scene of the crime, asserting that he was seated in the front of a white Cadillac, which pulled up beside Shakur’s vehicle before the fatal shots were fired from the back seat. The rapper sustained four gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries six days later.
During the search of Davis’s wife’s residence in July, law enforcement authorities discovered a copy of Davis’s memoir, wherein he detailed aspects of street gang life and the circumstances surrounding Shakur’s murder. In the memoir, Davis asserted that he was one of only two surviving witnesses to the shooting, with the other being Marion ‘Suge’ Knight, the former CEO of Death Row Records, who is presently serving a prison sentence for manslaughter in an unrelated case.
The latest arrest has prompted various reactions, including from Tupac’s stepbrother, Mopreme Shakur, who is also a rapper. He described the news as “bittersweet” and raised questions about the timing of the arrest, given Davis’s history of speaking about the case. Mopreme Shakur expressed a desire for answers and an exploration of potential accomplices in the crime.
Las Vegas Metro Police Department officials are scheduled to hold a news conference later today to provide further details on this significant breakthrough in the Tupac Shakur murder investigation.
