USAID And Humanity United Join Forces To Launch $45 Million Powered By The People Initiative

USAID, in partnership with Humanity United, has granted up to $45 million over five years to introduce the Powered by the People (PxP) initiative.

PxP is designed to offer adaptable and accessible support to bolster the capacity, resilience, and effectiveness of organizers and citizen-led social movements advocating for human rights, social justice, democracy, and inclusive development worldwide.

The PxP initiative will employ conflict-sensitive approaches to provide demand-driven assistance to social movement organizations and organizers. This includes flexible funding and rapid response resources to assist these organizations when and how they need it most.

It will also facilitate peer-to-peer learning, provide training in strategic decision-making and leadership development, and promote relationship-building among civil society organizations, grassroots organizers, historically marginalized communities, scholars, and donors.

President Biden initially unveiled the PxP initiative at the inaugural Summit for Democracy in 2021 as a crucial component of the Presidential Initiative for Democratic Renewal.

PxP will be executed by a diverse consortium comprising more than two dozen local, regional, and international organizations across over a dozen countries. PartnersGlobal, an international non-governmental organization specializing in the intersection of peacebuilding and democracy strengthening, leads this consortium.

In line with USAID’s localization objectives, local actors will assume a leading role in decision-making and action within the PxP framework.

USAID is pleased to announce that Humanity United, a philanthropic organization dedicated to fostering enduring peace and freedom, has committed $750,000 over three years to support PxP. Humanity United intends to establish a multi-donor fund through its affiliated entity, Humanity United Charitable Fund, which will provide further resources based on the priorities identified through PxP.

This initiative underlines USAID’s dedication to advancing human rights, social justice, democracy, and inclusive development in the regions it serves. PxP plays a crucial role in ensuring that support and resources are readily available to address the needs, opportunities, and challenges identified by local grassroots organizations and social movements around the world as they work toward enhancing dignity, empowerment, and prosperity in their communities.

The Powered by the People Initiative is one of the first projects launched under USAID’s newly established Bureau for Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance.
