Kenya has inked deals worth $4.48 billion for seven green projects on the sidelines of the COP28 summit. These projects encompass various initiatives, including geothermal generation plants, fertilizer production, and a data center powered by renewable energy, as detailed in an official statement.

Kenyan President William Ruto is championing the vision of transforming Africa into a “green powerhouse.” Currently, Kenya already generates an impressive 92% of its electricity from renewable sources such as geothermal, hydro, and wind. The nation is steadfast in its commitment to environmental conservation, aiming to plant 15 billion trees and rehabilitate 10,000 wetlands, emphasizing nature swaps.

Key Deals Signed:

1. $1.5 Billion Green Fertilizer Project: Kenya sealed a deal with Fortescue Future Industries for a green fertilizer project, a crucial step towards sustainable agriculture.

2. $1 Billion Geothermal Project at Suswa: Collaborating with the Indonesian government through Masdar-backed Pertamina Geothermal Energy, Kenya embarks on a $1 billion geothermal project at Suswa.

3. $800 Million Investment in 200MW Paka Geothermal Project: AMEA Power of the UAE and Geothermal Development Co. of Kenya joined forces for a significant investment in the 200MW Paka Geothermal Project.

4. $600 Million Green Data Center at Olkaria: Kenya partnered with EcoCloud to establish a $600 million data center at Olkaria, powered by green geothermal energy.

5. $270 Million Sustainable Agricultural Project: United Green and Kenya Development Corp. will implement a $270 million sustainable agricultural project, covering 15,000 hectares in the lake basin region.

6. $200 Million Clean Energy Supply Chain (CESC) Initiative: Kenya committed to a $200 million Clean Energy Supply Chain initiative, aligning with its dedication to green energy solutions.

7. $110 Million Geothermal Project at Menengai:  In collaboration with Globeleq, Kenya initiated a $110 million geothermal project at Menengai, contributing 35MW to the nation’s power grid.

These deals underscore Kenya’s proactive approach to green initiatives and sustainability. As an AfCFTA member country, Kenya continues to play a pivotal role in fostering environmentally conscious practices and contributing to the global fight against climate change.
