The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, Michele Sison, is scheduled to visit Accra, Ghana, from December 3 to 7 to participate in the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial.
Accompanying her will be U.S. Representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, and a delegation of other U.S. officials.*
During her stay in Ghana, Assistant Secretary Sison will engage in various events, including a U.S.-hosted side event focusing on “Improving Environmental Management in Peacekeeping Operations.” Additionally, she will participate in Sweden’s side event addressing “Women, Peace, and Security.” These discussions are crucial in addressing environmental sustainability and the role of women in peacekeeping.
The visit includes scheduled meetings with counterparts and senior UN officials, aiming to underscore the United States’ unwavering commitment to UN peacekeeping efforts.
Assistant Secretary Sison will also meet with the UN Country Team in Ghana, fostering collaboration and coordination.
The 2023 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial is expected to concentrate on key themes such as the protection of civilians, peacekeeper safety and security, and the active role of women in peacekeeping missions. Assistant Secretary Sison’s participation reflects the United States’ dedication to contributing constructively to global peacekeeping initiatives.
