President Felix Tshisekedi Sworn In for Second Term in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo witnessed the inauguration of President Felix Tshisekedi for his second term on Saturday, following contentious December elections.
Tensions flared as opposition candidates, including businessman Moise Katumbi, rejected the results, citing logistical issues, late openings, and inadequate materials in numerous polling stations.
President Tshisekedi, known as “Fatshi,” addressed the nation, expressing his commitment to a more united and prosperous Congo while acknowledging concerns regarding unemployment, youth, women’s rights, and national cohesion.
Despite winning over 70 percent of the vote, discontent looms as opposition figures called for the annulment of election results.
The electoral commission, CENI, acknowledged cases of fraud, vandalism, and intimidation, including the use of illegal voting machines. Reports from Goma and Beni in the eastern provinces highlighted protests, with burnt tires and attempted barricades.
This comes as opposition leaders, Katumbi and Martin Fayulu, called on supporters to express their discontent.
President Tshisekedi’s first term promises of improving living conditions and ending decades of conflict in the resource-rich yet impoverished nation faced criticism for unfulfilled commitments.
