In an exclusive interview conducted by Julian Pecquet of Jeune Afrique, U.S. Secretary of States, Antony J. Blinken, shared insights into the Biden administration’s approach to critical issues in Africa during his visit to Lagos, Nigeria.

On the political landscape in the Sahel region, Secretary Blinken expressed concern over recent developments in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. He stressed the importance of a timely return to civilian governance, with the U.S. supporting ECOWAS efforts to persuade coup leaders to restore constitutional order.
Secretary Blinken cautioned against external forces, like Wagner, exacerbating security issues and emphasized the significance of democratic governance in countering extremism.
The interview touched upon Secretary Blinken’s upcoming visit to Angola, where he commended President João Lourenço for his anti-corruption efforts.
Acknowledging the positive trajectory in Angola’s fight against corruption, he emphasized the role of civil society and the media in addressing corruption and highlighted ongoing partnerships, particularly the Lobito Corridor infrastructure project, as a significant economic catalyst.
Secretary Blinken also praised President Lourenço’s diplomatic role in managing crises, specifically in eastern Congo and Rwanda. He emphasized the importance of diplomatic resolutions over military interventions.
