U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken marked a significant milestone in the global American Spaces initiative by inaugurating the American Corner Lekki in Lagos, Nigeria. The ceremony, featuring a ribbon-cutting, signifies the continuous expansion of the American Spaces network, a key component of the United States’ people-to-people engagement strategy spanning over 140 countries.

American Corner Lekki, the latest addition to the network, epitomizes the future of American Spaces, providing local communities with convenient access to diverse programming and resources.

These include offerings on U.S. culture, English-language learning opportunities, internet services, as well as advisory services for those interested in studying in the United States, professional development programs, and various training initiatives.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the American Corners program, supported by local partners, serves as a vital global resource for education, economic opportunity, equity, and societal inclusion. The program has expanded its presence worldwide, boasting more than 600 cultural and information centers.

In 2023, the American Spaces network, comprising American Centers, American Corners, and Binational Centers, engaged with over 41 million people globally through nearly 1.5 million programs and opportunities. The African segment of the network, with 172 American Spaces in 52 countries, played a pivotal role in reaching over 1.6 million participants through approximately 20,000 in-person and virtual programs.

Nigeria, a key participant in the American Spaces initiative, hosts two American Centers in Abuja and Lagos, along with 10 American Corners located in universities, libraries, and community centers across the country. In 2023, Nigeria’s American Spaces and Affiliates reached nearly 100,000 participants in 21 cities through approximately 4,400 programs. These initiatives encompassed civic engagement, media literacy, women’s participation in politics, STEM education, creative industries, entrepreneurship, and youth development.

The inauguration of American Corner Lekki underscores the United States’ commitment to fostering global partnerships, facilitating educational opportunities, and promoting cultural exchange, creating a platform for mutual understanding and collaboration.
