International Day Of Zero Tolerance For Female Genital Mutilation 2024 – FIDA Advocacy

As the world marks the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) on Tuesday, FIDA Nigeria amplifies the urgent call to end this harmful practice.

With the theme “Her Voice. Her Future,” the focus remains on protecting the rights and well-being of young girls and women.

FGM is a barbaric act of gender-based violence, affecting millions globally. Shockingly, 4.4 million girls are at risk of undergoing this procedure this year alone, adding to the staggering statistic of at least 200 million women and girls already affected.

In Nigeria, FGM persists due to deeply ingrained cultural and traditional beliefs, compounded by the lack of federal legislation against it.

This perpetuates the cycle of secrecy surrounding the practice, leaving countless women exposed to physical, emotional, and psychological trauma, and in some cases, even death.

FIDA Nigeria emphasizes the importance of survivor-led movements in driving change. Survivors are not just victims; they are resilient individuals whose voices need to be heard.

The organization commits to investing in these movements, empowering survivors to become leaders in the fight against FGM.

The theme “Her Voice. Her Future.” Summed up the significance of empowering survivors and amplifying their stories. FIDA Nigeria stresses that survivors are not mere statistics but living proof to the strength of the human spirit.

Furthermore, FIDA Nigeria calls for collective action to raise awareness and advocate against FGM, especially at the grassroots level. Education and sensitization efforts are crucial in preventing the perpetuation of this harmful practice.

In light of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, FIDA Nigeria urges everyone to play a role in ending FGM.

It’s imperative to speak out against FGM in communities and to educate the youth about its dangers.

Additionally, women affected by FGM are encouraged to seek help from nearby health facilities to avoid further health complications.

Together, through concerted efforts and unwavering advocacy, we can put an end to the scourge of Female Genital Mutilation and ensure a safer, healthier future for women and girls everywhere.
