In the midst of escalating tensions within the Edo State political arena, stakeholders are urgently calling for a resolution to the feud between Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, and Governor Godwin Obaseki.
This appeal comes amidst brewing efforts by the House of Assembly to impeach Shaibu, ahead of the critical September 21, 2024 governorship election.
Former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie, has debunked reports suggesting that leaders of Edo South have reached a consensus on the choice of running mate for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Asue Ighodalo.
One prominent figure seeking to mediate the Obaseki/Shaibu discord is outspoken Catholic priest, the Very Rev. Father Andrew Obiyaan. In a heartfelt statement titled ‘Between Empathy and Impeachment for Your Deputy,’ Obinyan appealed directly to Governor Obaseki, urging him to intervene and halt the impeachment proceedings against his deputy.
The priest emphasised the importance of reconciliation over punitive measures, urging the governor to listen to his conscience and forestall any actions that may mar the political landscape of Edo State.
In his statement, Obiyaan urged Governor Obaseki to consider the broader implications of impeaching Shaibu, cautioning against the potential perception of betrayal and its ramifications on loyalty and political aspirations within the state.
Simultaneously, Senator Rowland Owie refuted claims of a purported meeting among Edo South PDP leaders to decide on the deputy governorship slot. He clarified that no such gathering had taken place, dismissing reports as misinformation spread for personal gain.
