NCC Urges Transparent Use of AI To Ensure Fairness And Privacy For Consumers

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has advocated for the transparent use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by developers to guarantee fairness and privacy for consumers.

This call came during an event held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, in commemoration of World Consumer Rights’ Day, themed “Fair and Responsible Artificial Intelligence for the Consumer”.

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, stated the importance of AI developers being transparent about the data, algorithms, and models used in AI systems. He stressed the need for fair and responsible deployment of AI to address challenges facing the country.

In his keynote address, Dr. Maida stated the significance of consumers understanding how AI systems work and having a means to address issues or biases. He stressed on the need for AI organizations to handle personal data responsibly, in adherence to strict privacy regulations.

The adoption of Fifth Generation Technology in Nigeria has led to increased deployment of AI across various sectors. Consequently, the NCC is urging for the ethical adoption of this innovation, especially in healthcare, financial, and transportation services.

Dr. Maida emphasized that the use of AI should be within the boundaries of the law, respecting citizens’ privacy and rights, and without biases. He reiterated the importance of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in AI systems to prevent biased decisions or discrimination.

He further urged AI developers in Nigeria to be transparent about the data, billing systems, and models used in AI systems to ensure fairness for all consumers.

The event also featured a roadshow showcasing the rights of consumers to good and durable telecommunications services, focusing on  the ongoing need to protect and empower consumers in the marketplace.

World Consumer Rights Day, observed annually on March 15, serves as a reminder of the fundamental consumer rights introduced in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, including the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose, and the right to be heard.

Since its introduction, World Consumer Rights Day has been instrumental in mobilizing global action on pressing consumer issues, with Nigeria actively participating in addressing critical consumer concerns.
