The Federal Ministry of Works has announced its plans to ensuring a level playing field for local contractors in handling road projects across the country.
The announcement came following a meeting between the Minister of Works, David Umahi, and a delegation from the Association of Ministry of Works’ Contractors in Abuja.
Minister Umahi said that while local contractors would be given opportunities, adherence to the highest standards and best practices would be non-negotiable criteria for consideration in securing contracts. He stressed the importance of strict compliance with procurement processes and job specifications, citing the critical role of road infrastructure in bolstering economic growth and national security.
Speaking to reporters, Umahi stated the need for contractors to streamline costs in line with prevailing economic realities, urging collective efforts to alleviate the challenges faced by Nigerians. He expressed optimism about President Bola Tinubu’s interventions in road infrastructure development and the timely release of funds to contractors, anticipating improved delivery on projects.
“We have to take back the country, to rescue our people from suffering because of terrible roads. Road is everything. If we have good roads, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity will reduce, and commerce will increase. Transportation costs will also become cheaper, and there will be more social activities,” Umahi emphasized.
Abdul-Kareen Smith, the spokesperson for the Association of Ministry of Works’ Contractors, extended gratitude to Umahi for championing initiatives such as the adoption of concrete technology for Nigerian roads, describing it as a transformative step towards economic revitalization.
