Emphasising the transformative potential of water beyond being a mere resource, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield stressed its role in fostering peace and supporting various facets of human existence.
Highlighting the dire situation faced by billions worldwide, particularly in conflict zones and regions severely impacted by climate change, where access to safe water remains a luxury, the Ambassador underscored the urgency for action.
She warned that water insecurity could exacerbate tensions between communities and perpetuate cycles of poverty and inequality.
The announcement, made at the historic 2023 United Nations Water Conference, saw the United States stepping up with a pledge of over $49 billion towards equitable, climate-resilient water, and sanitation investments.
This commitment aligns with the Water Action Agenda and aims to address critical challenges while advancing multiple Sustainable Development Goals, including health, education, gender equality, and economic growth.
