The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has rebuffed claims of legitimacy by the 27 lawmakers of the state Assembly who are threatening to impeach Governor Siminilayi Fubara.
The lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, asserted their authority to impeach the governor if he continues to allegedly violate constitutional and state laws.
However, the PDP, through its Publicity Secretary Sydney Tambari Gbara, urged the lawmakers to address their legitimacy question in accordance with Section 109 of the Constitution, citing their defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gbara criticized the lawmakers for allegedly disrupting the peace of the state and urged them to allow the court to determine their legitimacy.
He further warned that history would judge them harshly for choosing destabilization over reconciliation.
Responding to claims of non-implementation of the eight-point Peace Accord by Tony Okocha, Gbara affirmed Governor Fubara’s commitment to peace and accused Okocha of attempting to pressure the governor into unconstitutional actions.
