In the midst of escalating tensions fueled by Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, the United Nations Security Council is set to vote on Thursday regarding the Palestinian bid for full membership in the UN.
Diplomatic sources revealed to AFP that the vote will coincide with discussions on the Gaza situation, with several Arab ministers expected to attend.
The Palestinian application for full membership, initially submitted in 2011 and revived in early April, has faced staunch opposition from the United States, a veto-wielding member of the Security Council.
Despite this, the Arab Group reiterated its unwavering support for the Palestinians’ quest for statehood within the UN.
Algeria, a non-permanent member of the Security Council, has drafted a resolution recommending the admission of the State of Palestine to the United Nations.
However, the US, citing its stance on supporting statehood only through negotiations with Israel, has expressed opposition and signaled the possibility of utilizing its veto power.
The Palestinian Ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, stated their natural and legal right to seek admission, pointing out that 137 out of 193 UN member states already recognize a Palestinian state.
Israel’s UN Ambassador, Gilad Erdan, vehemently opposed the Palestinian bid, labeling it as a victory for “genocidal terror.” He referenced an attack by Hamas on October 7, which resulted in casualties on both sides, further escalating tensions in the region.
