Nigerians residing in South Africa have refuted claims circulating widely that Nigerian citizens in Kimberly, Northern Cape Province, attacked South African Police Service (SAPS) officers and damaged property. Instead, they have alleged instances of police brutality against Nigerians.
According to a statement issued by the Nigerians Citizens in South Africa (NICASA), signed by Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, President General, Dr. Elizabeth Ojo-Fafore, Secretary General, and Tony Okorie, Publicity Secretary, the incident has been reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for an impartial investigation.
Contrary to reports, NICASA asserts that Nigerians did not assault any SAPS officers or cause destruction while inside the police premises. The statement clarified that the visit by police to a Nigerian-owned business escalated into harassment and violence against a Nigerian individual, resulting in injuries.
The situation escalated when other Nigerians intervened, leading to verbal protests against the arrest of their fellow community member. Subsequently, SAPS officers allegedly used rubber bullets to disperse the gathering, leading to further arrests and injuries, including one individual breaking a window while attempting to escape.
NICASA highlighted the violation of constitutional rights, citing Sections 10 and 12 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which emphasize inherent dignity, freedom, and security of all persons within the country’s borders. They emphasized the need for SAPS to conduct its duties in accordance with the law, employing minimum force when necessary.
The umbrella body of Nigerians in South Africa has initiated dialogue with local police authorities in Kimberly and engaged with Nigerian diplomatic missions for intervention. A meeting has been scheduled to address the incident further.
NICASA reiterated its commitment to fostering positive relationships within the community and working collaboratively with SAPS to maintain safety and security. They emphasized their contributions as law-abiding citizens and pledged cooperation with law enforcement to uphold peace and harmony.
This development underscores ongoing tensions between Nigerian communities and law enforcement in South Africa, prompting calls for accountability and justice in handling such incidents.
