United States Urges Vigilance On 20th Anniversary Of UNSCR 1540 To Combat WMD Proliferation

In a statement marking the twentieth anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 (UNSCR 1540), the United States has emphasized the critical need to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

The resolution mandates that all nations take measures to thwart the transfer of WMD-related goods and knowledge to non-state actors, serving as a crucial tool in safeguarding global peace and security.

UNSCR 1540, adopted in 2004, addresses the proliferation of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, along with their means of delivery and financing. The United States asserts that despite two decades since its inception, the threat posed by these weapons remains significant, necessitating continued vigilance and collaboration among nations.

Expressing deep concern over the persistent risks of terrorism and the ambitions of non-state actors to acquire, develop, traffic, or utilize WMD, the United States urges all countries to fulfill their obligations under UNSCR 1540. Particularly, nations are called upon to ensure that sensitive goods and knowledge with both WMD and legitimate commercial applications remain under regulatory control, preventing their diversion into the hands of proliferators.

The United States highlights the importance of collective action and cooperation in combatting WMD proliferation, underscoring the need for sustained efforts to implement and enforce UNSCR 1540 provisions. Furthermore, the nation urges all Security Council members to support and implement new provisions outlined in UNSCR 2663, which extends the mandate of the 1540 Committee until 2032.

As the international community commemorates the twentieth anniversary of UNSCR 1540, the United States reaffirms its commitment to countering the proliferation of WMD and calls upon all nations to join forces in addressing this critical global challenge.
