GOP Senators Alarmed By Trump’s Trial Testimony As Poll Numbers Waver

Amidst a week of trial testimony shedding light on former President Trump’s alleged affairs and hush money payments, GOP senators express growing concerns over his electoral prospects.

Despite high poll numbers in battleground states against President Biden, recent developments have raised red flags among Republican lawmakers.

The trial in Manhattan, which has featured salacious details including testimony from porn actor Stormy Daniels about her alleged encounter with Trump, has put a spotlight on Trump’s challenges with women voters. GOP senators fear this could exacerbate his biggest liability heading into November.

The concern among Republicans is compounded by recent primary results, notably Nikki Haley’s strong showing in Indiana despite ending her presidential bid early. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) emphasized the need for an engagement strategy, noting a substantial portion of the GOP base still has reservations about Trump.

Tillis highlighted a troubling trend: consistent Republican voters, crucial to the GOP base, expressing dissatisfaction with Trump. While unlikely to vote for Biden, there’s a risk they may simply stay home in November, potentially impacting down-ballot races.

A significant percentage of Republican voters in key early states have voiced dissatisfaction with Trump as their party’s nominee, according to an AP VoteCast. This dissatisfaction, coupled with Trump’s struggles among college-educated and suburban women voters, poses challenges for his reelection bid.

Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) expressed dismay over the rehashing of Trump’s alleged affair with Daniels, drawing parallels to the Clinton administration’s scandal. Despite GOP attempts to downplay the impact of Daniels’s testimony, some senators acknowledge its potential to resonate with voters.

While some GOP senators believe “values voters” will still support Trump, others recognize the discomfort with his behavior among certain demographics. However, the prevailing sentiment among Republicans remains that the majority of evangelicals and conservative Catholics will prioritize strategic voting over moral concerns.

GOP senators are closely monitoring the trial’s impact on Trump’s public image and electoral prospects. The decision by Trump’s legal team to request additional time to cross-examine Daniels indicates their perception of potential damage, according to Sen. Tillis.
