In a recent ActiVote poll conducted between June 5-21, former President Donald Trump has surged ahead of incumbent President Joe Biden among independent voters, showcasing a lead as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
The poll, which surveyed 2,029 likely voters, revealed that in a two-way matchup, Trump commands 61 percent of the independent vote, while Biden trails at 39 percent. Even in a three-way scenario including independent candidate Robert D. Kennedy Jr., Trump maintains a strong lead with 47 percent of independents supporting him, compared to Biden’s 28 percent.
This latest poll follows previous surveys indicating a competitive race between the two candidates among independents. A May survey by NPR/PBS/NewsHour/Marist National showed Trump leading with 54 percent to Biden’s 42 percent, while a subsequent June survey by the same pollsters had Biden narrowly ahead at 50 percent to Trump’s 48 percent, with 2 percent undecided.
While national polls provide insights into voter sentiment, the ultimate outcome of the election hinges on winning key swing states due to the Electoral College system. Securing 270 electoral votes is crucial for victory, regardless of the national popular vote.
Independents constitute a pivotal voting bloc whose preferences could sway swing states crucial to the election’s outcome. Analysts suggest that small shifts among independent voters in battleground states may ultimately decide the next president.
Biden and Trump are scheduled to face off in their first debate on June 27 in Atlanta, Georgia, followed by a second debate on September 10. Voters will cast their ballots on November 5, determining the country’s next leader.
