Gernot Rohr Expresses Concern Over Nigeria’s World Cup Prospects.
Former Nigeria Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has voiced his concerns about the possibility of Nigeria missing out on another World Cup, calling it a “shameful” scenario for the footballing nation.
Rohr, who led the Super Eagles to the playoff round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers before being dismissed by the Nigeria Football Federation, reflected on the team’s recent struggles. Under his guidance, Nigeria had reached the crucial playoff stage but ultimately failed to qualify for the tournament after a defeat to Ghana’s Black Stars.
Currently, the three-time African champions are facing difficulties in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with their recent defeat to the Cheetahs of Benin further complicating their campaign. Rohr, who played a significant role in the team’s previous successes, commented on the situation.
“If they miss another one, for such a football country with the best players in Africa, it would be a little bit shameful,” Rohr stated. “So I think the players will do everything to go there (the World Cup), and also the Federation and the staff.”
Despite the challenges, Rohr remains hopeful but realistic about Nigeria’s chances. “But now, of course, they must be realistic and say that it’s only three points in four games,” he added.
As Nigeria grapples with its current form, Rohr’s words serve as a reminder of the high expectations and pride associated with Nigerian football. The nation now faces an uphill battle to secure a place in the 2026 World Cup, with both players and officials under pressure to turn their fortunes around.
