Administrator Samantha Power of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) introduced a Digital Policy aimed at advancing global development and ensuring equitable digital ecosystems.
Announced at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the policy outlines a strategic approach to harnessing technology’s potential while addressing associated risks.
The new USAID Digital Policy focuses on three primary goals: enhancing development and humanitarian outcomes through digital infrastructure investments, improving digital knowledge and skills, and promoting privacy, security, transparency, and human rights. With an initial funding allocation of $14.6 million, the policy aims to support responsible AI adoption, bolster cybersecurity in partner countries, and strengthen digital connectivity.
A component of the initiative is the proposal for a new USAID Office dedicated to implementing the policy and adapting to evolving technological trends. This office will facilitate cross-sector investments, enhance the integration of digital tools across USAID’s programs, and foster dynamic partnerships with the private sector and government entities.
In addition to this policy, USAID has launched DigitalDevelopment.org, a new platform designed to connect stakeholders with resources for digital development globally. This platform is expected to streamline support for digital transformation initiatives.
In a related achievement, USAID has collaborated with the Vodafone Foundation and the Government of Tanzania to establish the m-mama emergency transportation system. This initiative has successfully assisted 100,000 expectant mothers in Tanzania, reducing maternal mortality rates and expanding to other regions including Lesotho, Kenya, and Malawi.
Furthermore, USAID has expanded its digital cooperation efforts with Latvia and Estonia to enhance digital capabilities across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Africa. New agreements will drive advancements in e-governance, digital skills, and cybersecurity in these regions.
