The United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has appointed renowned Nigerian actress, Funke Akindele, as its National Goodwill Ambassador for Nigeria.

The appointment was announced during the World AIDS Day commemoration in Abuja on December 3.

Leopold Zekeng, UNAIDS Country Director for Nigeria, praised Akindele’s dedication and commitment to social change, expressing optimism about her contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS. “We are thrilled to welcome Funke Akindele as our National Goodwill Ambassador for Nigeria,” he said. “Her powerful voice, vast influence, and commitment to social change make her an invaluable ally in our efforts to combat HIV and support people living with HIV in Nigeria. We look forward to working with her to drive positive impact and progress in the fight against AIDS.”

Akindele, known for her iconic ‘Jenifa’ franchise, has won multiple awards, including the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2009. She is also a five-time recipient of the Best Actress in a Comedy award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.

The multifaceted star took to Instagram to express her excitement about the appointment, pledging to use her platform to support UNAIDS’ mission. “I am deeply honoured to have been appointed as @UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador. I remain committed to using my voice and platform to support the global fight against HIV/AIDS,” she wrote. “Together we can work towards a world where everyone has access to the care, support, and treatment they need. I look forward to collaborating with relevant stakeholders and you all to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote health and human rights for all.”

Akindele is also preparing to release her highly anticipated movie ‘Everybody Loves Jenifa’ on December 13.
