Devastating Earthquake In Myanmar Claims Over 1,600 Lives.
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake has struck Myanmar, claiming the lives of more than 1,600 people and leaving thousands injured. The tremors were felt in neighbouring countries, including Thailand, where several buildings collapsed.
Rescue efforts are underway as hundreds remain trapped under the rubble. In Mandalay, the city closest to the earthquake’s epicentre, at least 90 people are believed to be buried beneath a collapsed apartment block. A Red Cross official confirmed the ongoing rescue operations, with teams working tirelessly to pull survivors from the debris.
In Bangkok, Thailand, at least 50 construction workers are unaccounted for after a high-rise building was flattened. Authorities have reported 10 fatalities, 42 injuries, and 78 people still missing.
Myanmar’s military leadership has stated that 3,408 people have been injured, with 139 missing. The country has also suffered extensive structural damage, with over 1,500 homes reported destroyed. Despite the devastation, there has been a glimmer of hope—AFP news agency reported that a woman was rescued alive after being trapped for 30 hours.
Amidst the ongoing rescue efforts, Myanmar’s People’s Defence Force has accused the military of continuing airstrikes near the earthquake’s epicentre, adding to the country’s turmoil.
As search operations continue, authorities are urging international support to help in the recovery and aid efforts for those affected by the disaster.
