Edo State Governor Pays Condolence Visit To Kano Over Uromi Tragedy.

In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo arrived in Kano State today to extend his condolences to the Kano State Government and the grieving families of 16 travellers who were tragically killed in Uromi, Edo State. The visit comes in the wake of a horrific incident last week, where the victims, primarily hunters from northern Nigeria, were brutally burnt alive by a mob in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi, located in Esan North-East Local Government Area.

Governor Okpebholo, who touched down at the Kano State Government House this afternoon, described the killings as “barbaric and unacceptable,” vowing that his administration would ensure justice is served. Speaking alongside Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, he expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the affected families. “This tragedy has shaken us all,” Okpebholo said. “I am here to stand with the people of Kano and assure them that those responsible will face the full weight of the law.”

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, has sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria. Reports indicate that the victims, who were travelling from Port Harcourt to Kano for Sallah celebrations, were intercepted by members of the Edo State Security Corps and local vigilantes. After discovering hunting rifles in their vehicle, the group was falsely accused of being kidnappers, leading to a mob attack that ended in their gruesome deaths. Four survivors were rescued and are receiving treatment at His Grace Hospital in Uromi, while authorities have arrested 14 suspects linked to the killings.

During his visit, Governor Okpebholo revealed that President Bola Tinubu has personally intervened, directing security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation. “The President is not pleased with this incident, and neither are we,” he stated. “The suspects will be transferred to Abuja for further interrogation after the holidays, and more arrests are expected as we uncover the truth.”

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf praised Okpebholo’s swift response, noting that it demonstrated a commitment to unity and justice. “We are grateful for this visit and the actions taken by the Edo State Government,” Yusuf said. “This tragedy must serve as a lesson, and we urge the federal government to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.” He also called for compensation for the victims’ families, emphasising the need for closure and support during this difficult time.

The visit has been widely welcomed by community leaders in Kano, including Fred Akhigbe, head of the Edo community in the state, who commended Okpebholo for fostering peace between the two regions. “This gesture reassures us that we are not alone in our grief,” Akhigbe said. “We urge both communities to remain united and calm.”

As investigations continue, Governor Okpebholo has suspended all unregistered vigilante groups in Edo State, including the commander of the Edo State Security Corps, in a bid to prevent further incidents of vigilante violence. The tragedy has reignited national debates about mob justice and the need for stronger security measures to protect innocent lives.

For the people of Kano and the families of the victims, Okpebholo’s visit offers a glimmer of hope amid profound loss. “We will not rest until justice is done,” he pledged, as he concluded his emotional address at the Government House.
