Nigeria And Pakistan Deepen Military Ties Through High-Level Strategic Visit.
In a significant move to strengthen military cooperation, Nigeria welcomed the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of Pakistan, General Shahir Shamsad Mirza, to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
During his visit, General Mirza held talks with Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, who commended the engagement as a meaningful step towards reinforcing bilateral defence relations.
General Musa expressed Nigeria’s strong commitment to enhancing collaboration with Pakistan, especially in the areas of capacity building and joint training programmes. He highlighted the long-standing relationship between both nations, noting that over 2,000 Nigerian military officers have received training at prestigious Pakistani military institutions.
He also identified key areas of partnership, including Special Forces training, veteran welfare, border security, and intelligence sharing, all of which he said are crucial to maintaining national and regional stability.
General Mirza, in his remarks, applauded the Nigerian Armed Forces for their relentless efforts in tackling terrorism and internal security threats. He described Nigeria as “a giant leader in Africa” and an indispensable strategic partner, pointing to the historical and cultural bonds that unite both nations.
He further expressed optimism about deepening ties with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), emphasising the value of shared experiences in combating modern security challenges.
The high-level visit marks a renewed commitment to defence cooperation and highlights the role of international partnerships in promoting peace and security across regions.
