Former Deputy Governor Benedict Alabi Declares 2026 Governorship Bid In Osun State

Former Deputy Governor Benedict Alabi Declares 2026 Governorship Bid In Osun State.

Former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Benedict Alabi, has formally declared his intention to contest the state’s governorship election slated for 2026.

The announcement was made during a special service at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in Ile-Ife, where Alabi, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), revealed that his decision to run was inspired by divine direction and deep personal reflection.

Alabi, who hails from Ikire in Irewole Local Government Area—part of the Osun West Senatorial District—made his declaration at a time when calls within the APC are growing louder for the party’s 2026 ticket to be zoned to Osun West. Many within the party believe the zone deserves a shot at the governorship, especially if former governor Adegboyega Oyetola decides not to run again.

“I have sought guidance from God and, having received direction, I am informing the good people of Osun that I will run in the 2026 governorship election,” Alabi stated before the congregation.

Alabi served as Deputy Governor during Oyetola’s administration and is expected to be a strong contender, particularly if the incumbent, Governor Ademola Adeleke, seeks re-election.

Expressing optimism about his chances, Alabi said, “We shall emerge victorious by God’s grace. Our goal is to work towards the advancement of our dear state and uplift the lives of our people.”

He also called on the Catholic community and the general public to pray for Nigeria, describing the country as the spiritual homeland of its citizens. “Nigeria is the Jerusalem for Nigerians. I want to encourage families to come together for the progress of our nation,” he said.

Alabi’s declaration positions him as one of the first major contenders to step into the 2026 gubernatorial race in Osun, setting the tone for what is expected to be a vibrant and competitive political season.
