Court Nullifies Obasa’s Removal As Lagos Assembly Speaker, Declares Impeachment Illegal.
The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has nullified the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, declaring the action unconstitutional, illegal, and void.
Delivering the ruling on Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Adesanya also set aside all proceedings and resolutions passed by the Assembly on 13 January 2025 — the date on which Obasa was controversially ousted and Mojisola Meranda was appointed as Speaker.
Obasa had taken legal action to challenge his removal, arguing that it violated both the constitutional provisions and the internal procedures of the House. In a decisive judgement, the court ruled in his favour, asserting that due process had not been observed in the impeachment process.
Justice Adesanya stated that the Assembly’s actions on the day in question were invalid, and all decisions arising from that sitting were to be disregarded. The court also awarded Obasa ₦500,000 in damages, citing the procedural breaches that led to his unlawful removal.
The judgement effectively reinstates Mudashiru Obasa as the rightful Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and annuls the short-lived tenure of Mojisola Meranda.
Legal analysts have described the ruling as a significant affirmation of the rule of law and a cautionary tale for legislative bodies to adhere strictly to constitutional guidelines in their internal affairs.
