Federal Government Secures Release Of Six Nigerian Women Detained In Cape Verde.
The Federal Government has successfully secured the release of six Nigerian women who were wrongfully detained by authorities in Cape Verde on false allegations of human trafficking.
Their release was confirmed on Thursday in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the women departed the island nation. According to the statement, the Nigerian diplomatic mission in Guinea-Bissau was instrumental in facilitating discussions with Cape Verdean authorities to resolve the matter.
The Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, explained that the women had travelled to Cape Verde for a holiday but were wrongly accused of engaging in human trafficking — an allegation that was later proven to be unfounded.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to happily inform you that the Nigerian nationals, ladies, who were detained in Cape Verde have all been released and have left the country, too,” the statement read.
It added that the Ministry, through the Nigerian Mission in Guinea-Bissau, engaged Cape Verdean authorities diplomatically and professionally to secure the women’s release.
The Ministry expressed its appreciation to the Cape Verdean government for its cooperation in resolving the issue and reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerian citizens abroad.
This development has been welcomed as a significant diplomatic success and a reassurance to Nigerians travelling overseas that their government stands ready to defend their rights and protect them from unjust treatment.
