Nigeria Calls For Fairer Global Order At BRICS Meeting.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to fostering a fairer and more inclusive global order. Speaking at the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Tuggar emphasized the need for reforms that reflect contemporary realities and empower the Global South.
Tuggar expressed gratitude to the Brazilian government for its hospitality and to the BRICS bloc for conferring upon Nigeria the status of Partner Country. This designation demonstrates the bloc’s dedication to promoting inclusive multilateralism.
The Minister highlighted BRICS’ potential as a collaborative alternative to outdated international frameworks, citing initiatives such as the New Development Bank and discussions on a common payment system. He reiterated Nigeria’s alignment with Brazil’s 2025 BRICS Chairmanship priorities, including peace and security, sustainable development, health cooperation, and responsible governance of artificial intelligence.
Tuggar emphasized the significance of South-South Cooperation, asserting that the Global South should be proactive agents in crafting inclusive and sustainable solutions. He highlighted Nigeria’s potential as a natural partner in advancing BRICS objectives, citing its youthful population, vibrant technology sector, and strategic geographic position.
The Minister called for urgent reforms of global governance institutions, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to better reflect 21st-century realities. Nigeria is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a new era of global cooperation founded on principles of equity, solidarity, and mutual respect.
