Social Media Activist VeryDarkMan Granted Bail By EFCC.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted administrative bail to Martins Innocent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), following his arrest over allegations of financial crimes. The commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the development in Abuja yesterday, stating that Otse will be released once he meets all bail conditions.
Otse, a prominent social media activist, was detained after the EFCC obtained a remand order, prompted by petitions accusing him of serious financial malfeasance. Oyewale emphasised that the commission acted within its legal mandate to investigate such claims, urging the public to allow the EFCC to carry out its duties impartially.
“The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect under investigation,” Oyewale said. “He has been offered administrative bail and will be released after fulfilling all conditions.”
The EFCC revealed that Otse had repeatedly ignored invitations to address the allegations, which were raised through petitions sent to his known addresses and communication channels. In a statement posted on its official X account, the agency clarified that the activist’s arrest stemmed from its obligation to tackle economic and financial crimes.
“The petitions pertain to grave allegations of financial malfeasance which cannot be ignored by the commission,” the statement read. It further noted that Otse’s refusal to cooperate necessitated his detention.
The case has drawn significant attention, with Otse’s arrest sparking discussions online. The EFCC, however, remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing financial misconduct without fear or favour.
In related developments, the EFCC recently secured convictions against two internet fraudsters in Kaduna and arrested 35 suspected fraudsters in Edo. Additionally, Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo was invited by the commission over allegations of money spraying at her daughter’s wedding.
The EFCC continues to call for public support in its fight against economic crimes, assuring Nigerians of its dedication to upholding justice.
