Explosives Hidden In Qurans: Customs Thwarts Shocking Smuggling Plot At Seme Border

Explosives Hidden In Qurans: Customs Thwarts Shocking Smuggling Plot At Seme Border.

In a dramatic operation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Seme Area Command has uncovered a brazen smuggling attempt involving explosive materials concealed within copies of the Quran. The seizure, which took place weeks ago along the Badagry–Lagos Expressway, has raised alarm over the audacity of smugglers and the potential threat to national security.

During a routine inspection, NCS operatives intercepted five cartons containing suspected corrosive mercury, a hazardous substance, cunningly hidden inside Qurans. The illicit cargo was being transported in a red Toyota Avensis. Dr. Ben Oramalugo, the Customs Area Controller, confirmed the operation’s success, describing it as a significant breakthrough in the fight against smuggling.

One suspect has been apprehended and is currently under investigation as authorities work to unravel the full scope of the plot. In a related development, the NCS also recovered foreign currencies worth N8.9 million in April, further underscoring the scale of illegal activities at the border.

The discovery has sparked serious concern about the lengths to which smugglers will go to evade detection, with fears that this incident may be linked to a broader criminal or smuggling network. Dr. Oramalugo praised the vigilance of his team and urged the public to remain proactive in reporting suspicious activities to bolster efforts against the trafficking of dangerous and prohibited items.

“This interception sends a clear message that the Nigeria Customs Service remains resolute in safeguarding our borders,” he said. “We call on all citizens to support our efforts by providing timely information to prevent such threats.”

The NCS continues its investigation, with heightened security measures now in place at the Seme border to deter further smuggling attempts. This operation serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by customs authorities in tackling sophisticated criminal networks.
