Lagos Restaurant Thirty8 Takes Legal Action Against Woman Who Made Defamatory Ritual And Kidnapping Claims.

Lounge Thirty8, a popular restaurant located along Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road, has launched legal proceedings against a woman and her associate following what the establishment describes as baseless and damaging accusations posted on social media. The defendants, one of whom is known by the X handle @General_Somto, alleged that the restaurant’s branch was involved in ritual killings and kidnappings, sparking widespread concern and public scrutiny.

The controversy began when the woman shared a series of emotional video posts on X, claiming she had a terrifying experience near the female restroom at Thirty8. In the clips, she alleged she had been confined within the premises and only spoke out after securing her freedom. “I’m not lying,” she stated, urging others to investigate a specific door near the restroom, claiming it concealed evidence of “white clothes” and “charms” linked to ritual activities. She insisted her intention was not to ruin the business but to expose what she believed to be dangerous activities.

The allegations, which quickly gained traction online, prompted a swift response from Lounge Thirty8. The restaurant’s management issued a statement categorically denying the claims, describing them as “malicious falsehoods” intended to tarnish the eatery’s reputation. They confirmed that legal action has been initiated against the woman and her associate for defamation, citing the significant harm caused to the business’s goodwill and operations.

“We are a reputable establishment committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for our patrons,” a spokesperson for Thirty8 said. “These unfounded allegations have caused undue distress to our staff, customers, and the wider community. We are pursuing justice through the courts to address this matter and protect our brand.”

The case has drawn significant attention, with posts on X reflecting divided sentiments. Some users expressed scepticism about the woman’s claims, citing the lack of verifiable evidence, while others called for a thorough investigation into the allegations. The Guardian Nigeria reported that the restaurant is now under public scrutiny, with the outlet conducting its own inquiries into the matter to ascertain the facts.

Legal experts note that defamation cases in Nigeria hinge on proving that the statements were false, damaging, and made with reckless disregard for the truth. If found liable, the defendants could face substantial penalties, including financial compensation and a public apology. The Lagos State Police have yet to comment on whether they are investigating the claims of ritual activities or kidnappings, which adds to the complexity of the case.

Lounge Thirty8, known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse menu, has been a staple in Lagos’s dining scene, attracting both locals and travellers near the airport. The restaurant has urged its customers to continue their support, assuring them that it remains committed to maintaining high standards of safety and hospitality.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the case serves as a reminder of the power and potential consequences of social media in shaping public perception. The courts will now determine the veracity of the claims and the appropriate recourse, while Lagosians await further clarity on this troubling episode.

For further updates, Lounge Thirty8 has directed inquiries to their official channels, and the public is encouraged to await the outcome of the legal process before drawing conclusions.
